Biography of Jackson Dearing

As told by Anne McCardell, Meridiem Labradors

My name is Skyline Bold Temptation, and I'm called Jackson Five, Five, for short, but I'm really six. That makes 11. I must have been born in Sweden because they tell me I am a Lapdog, so I suppose I came from Lapland. There aren't that many comfortable laps for a 90 pound dog, but I make do with what I have. I don't know how I got here. I thought I was a Labrador, not a Laprador. It would make my doggy head spin, if I cared. It really doesn't matter. I live in the moment. I'm a dog.

Notice I didn't say "I'm just a dog". I'm proud, I'm kind, I'm smart, and dog spelled backwards is God. It doesn't really matter where I came from, I was sent from heaven, and now I'm here.

My people are Mike and Amanda, but Amanda is my world. I hate it when she cries. It makes me want to cry. I can always make her laugh, even when she's sad. Being a dog means that I don't dwell on things. I don't plan, so everything is a great surprise. Everyone should live life like a dog. I go white water rafting and I'm a great camp dog. Secretly I think the camp people like me better than they like Mike and Amanda. They get more excited when they see me. I love to swim and fetch, and I can jump almost to the sky, like I'm on a springboard.

I like to go to dog shows because Amanda sleeps on my bed. She snores VERY loud, and then tells everyone it was me. It makes her happy when I take her around the ring. She's pretty good, too. She gets all dressed up, just to be seen with me. She usually wins a ribbon. The judge shakes her hand and tells her she's a good girl. I can hear applause from all over the show grounds, and it's all about me, (the other dogs might as well just go home), but I like to let Amanda think she's done something good. She makes me very proud. She's so grateful to be with me that she gives me lots of treats. All I do is stand there and wag my tail. She's the one that does all the work.

We're doing something very important. I'm learning to be a therapy dog. That means I will go and visit people who aren't feeling so well, and I will make them smile, and that will make me smile. That's my specialty. Amanda can go with me, but she's not a lapdog. She doesn't get to lick people's faces, or sniff them, or put her head in their laps. That's frowned upon in the human world. Only dogs can do that. Funny creatures, humans.

Visiting people and making them smile will be very easy for me. My name is Jackson, and I'm a dog. That's what dogs do.
